A facsimile of part of the first entry in the diary:-

The National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ)

is campaigning to make it clear that shorthand is still a vital part of the journalists' toolbox despite the ever changing landscape of digital media. Kim Fletcher, chairman of the NCTJ says, "Strangely, its more necessary than ever."

They believe Shorthand still has many benefits compared to much more sophisticated recording devices, "If you have a shorthand note you can find the quote very quickly. You go in with a tape recorder, or a digital recorder, and if you've spent an hour in there with your recorder you've got an hour of tape to go through, that takes quite a long time."

There are practical situations - most notably in the courts - he says, where you cannot take a digital recorder and you need a shorthand note.

2010 is the 350th Anniversary of Samuel Pepy’s famous diary!

The diary was written in one of the many standard forms of shorthand used in Pepys's time, in this case called Tachygraphy and devised by Thomas Shelton. Though it is clear from its content that it was written as a purely personal record of his life and not for publication, there are indications Pepys actively took steps to preserve the bound manuscripts of his diary. Apart from writing it out in fair copy from rough notes, he also had the loose pages bound into six volumes, catalogued them in his library with all his other books, and must have known that eventually someone would find them interesting.
